Republic of Serbia: Education Improvement Project

 The following project was approved today by the World Bank's Board:

CREDIT AMOUNT: IDA - US$10 million
TERMS: Grace period = 10 years; Maturity = 20 years
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project will support the government of Serbia's reform agenda in education and make supplemental funding available directly to schools. Half the funding will finance a school grant scheme that will make funding available directly to school directors and teachers in primary and secondary education. The project will also help the Ministry of Education and Science to develop information to monitor the performance of the education system, including standards-based assessment of student performance. It will also fund capacity building training to improve the governance of education in schools and municipalities, as well as in the central ministry.
