WASHINGTON, March 16, 2004—The following projects were approved today by the World Bank’s Board:

CREDIT AMOUNT: IDA US$21 Million

TERMS: Grace period = 10 years; Maturity = 20 years

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:This project is designed to improve energy efficiency in heating buildings in order to make heating more affordable and safe for the users. A top priority is to reduce the environmental impact of the use of dirty fuels for heating buildings in Serbia. An associated GEF residential energy efficiency project is being prepared in parallel to this IDA project. While the IDA project will focus on improving the functional and health environments of social sector buildings, the GEF project would improve energy efficiency in residential buildings. The combination of IDA and GEF support for public and residential buildings, would help the Government of Serbia develop effective programs and institutions to assist public and private initiatives for improving energy efficiency in public and residential buildings.
